| Open Your Own Mail
Many small business owners get caught up in the day to day operations and selling of their product. Most get so busy, they forget some of the simpler tasks that should be done on a regular basis to make sure their business is on an even keel. Below you will find several tips that we have found many small business owners overlook and which have caused hardship and even failure in some businesses. Open all the mail – You would think that anyone in the office could open the mail and distribute it appropriately. But if someone other than you the owner open the mail, you may not see the note on a bill payment or see something related to a client. Most importantly, opening your mail will keep you abreast of what is happening in the office that you should know about. Sign all the checks yourself – So you get busy during the day and get a check stamp for paying bills or you assign the job to your bookkeeper. That’s delegation, right? It sure is, but if you don’t look at what is being paid and to whom on the check you are leaving yourself wide open to theft of your cash in the bank. Employee theft isn’t something we want to think about, but it is there in larger numbers than most realize. Open the bank statement each month – Even if you do not look at it at all, it gives the unusual or very large transactions. If your bookkeeper can’t sign checks, I bet she has your debit card number and Pin. Answer the phones yourself – Surprise your clients every so often by answering the inbound phone calls. It will pleasantly surprise them and is a great marketing tool to touch base with them on occasion. Say Thank You to your staff – Believe it or not, most employees are human just like you and I. And we all like a bit of praise every so often. So tell them thank you once in a while by bringing in doughnuts in the morning… or treating them to lunch once in a while… or just by saying you appreciate them and they are doing a good job. It’s amazing the positive attitudes that will develop from this as well as employee loyalty. Perform a Random Act of Kindness – We all need to smile more often and help each other. I have made it a personal goal to weekly provide a random act of kindness to someone in the world. A small thing really and it doesn’t take much time or money. But if you have your Company name or logo on, the recipient knows where it came from and the goodwill you create far surpasses the cost. And BY DAMN, it just plain feels good. Things I do are… Let someone with a couple of items slip in front of you at the store. Give a client a free hour and tell them on the bill thanks for being a client. Let an employee slip out at 4:00 on a pretty Friday afternoon. Buy the next person in line at McDonalds their lunch. Help someone with a door. Tell a lady her perfume smells glorious. Anything that puts a smile on someone’s face.
