| How To Choose The Right Insurance Agent
To efficiently and cost-effectively manage a business there are several professionals a business owner should have on board as consultants. An insurance agent is one of these. But how do you choose the RIGHT insurance agent for you and your business? Some agents are well trained in homeowners and auto policies, some are well versed in life and health insurance and still others are good with workers comp and business policies. Just like other professions, not all insurance agents are good at helping you choose the right insurance for you and your business just like some doctors can help you with your broken leg and others with your heart. It may be that you need to pick more than one agent to get the expertise in insurance you need.
In our firm, we have one insurance agent who handles our business and personal auto, home, liability and workers comp policies and a different agent who handles our health policies. Never assume the agent you play golf with is good at advising you on business insurance if he only sells home and auto policies.
So, how do you pick the right ones to deal with?
First, you need to find an agent who works for you and is easily accessible. Talk to your business associates about who they use and what they think of their agent. Make a list of good versus bad about the agents you hear about. Don’t hire a professional that never gets back with you or is always trying to sell you something you don’t want.
Next, you need to find an agent that writes business policies for workers comp and business liability and umbrella policies. Or one that works on Health coverage all the time. Ask what percentage of their business is from these types of policies. Discuss your concerns about coverage and see if they are knowledgeable about your industry and problem insurance areas.
Finally, make sure you get along with the agent and his staff. Remember, these are the folks who are supposed to help you with a claim should something arise and keep you and your business covered at the least cost available. The worst thing you can do is hire an agent who just sends you to the adjuster every time you have a problem.
Just remember that insurance agents are paid on a commission basis, so it is in their best interest to sell you policies. Make sure your agent is working for you and wants a long term business relationship. Many a man has lived his life insurance rich and cash poor from making policy payments.
